Why Classroom Transitions Are Hard: What Teachers Need to Know

Transition time is one of the highest-demand moments in the school day. And yet it is rarely planned for in the same way that lesson content is.
Pack-up time. Moving between classrooms. The shift from outdoor play back to learning. The change from independent work to group activity. Each of these asks something significant of the brain. For some students, the accumulated weight of those transitions across a school day is one of the primary reasons they arrive home completely dysregulated.
What Transitions Require from the Brain
Every classroom transition involves a cluster of executive functions. A student must inhibit their current activity, shift their attention, update their expectations for what comes next, and activate the behaviours needed for the new context. For students who are managing sensory needs, attention differences, anxiety, or a challenging home environment, that sequence places a heavy cognitive load on an already stretched system.
The brain is also a prediction machine. It runs most efficiently when it can answer “what comes next?” without effort. Transitions introduce a gap in that prediction. Some students tolerate that gap easily. Others, particularly those who are autistic, have ADHD, or carry heightened anxiety, find it genuinely distressing, even when the transition is entirely routine.
What Transition Difficulty Looks Like in the Classroom
It does not always look like a meltdown. In the classroom, transition difficulty often looks like a student who takes too long to get started on the next task. Who wanders between pack-up and the next activity. Who seems to arrive to the new context already frustrated or disengaged. Who needs several redirections before they settle.
These are not behaviour problems. They are nervous system responses to a regulatory demand that exceeded the student’s current capacity. There is also a masking factor to consider. Some students hold themselves together during the school day at significant internal cost. Their transition difficulty is invisible at school and emerges at home. This does not mean the difficulty is not real. It means their regulatory reserves were already depleted before they walked through the front door at home.

Why Structure Is a Regulatory Tool, Not a Restriction
Transition supports that reduce uncertainty work because they address the brain’s predictability need before the transition happens. Visual schedules, verbal advance warnings, time anchors, and consistent routines all serve this function. They are not accommodations for difficult students. They are neurologically sound practice for all students.
